SonicWall Email Security Appliances are used to provide security measures beyond what is built into Exchange for our organizations. Using a third-party tool it blocks malicious email BEFORE it reaches our servers, preventing the storage of malicious and junk files. These appliances have greatly reduced junk and threats from our users' mailboxes.
  • Centralized management
  • Reasonably priced
  • Robust reporting capabilities
  • Manufacturer is focused on several solutions (so likely not enough focus in one area)
  • Not the most cost effective solution
While this solution is capable of managing a smaller environment, I'm weary to install it into a larger customers' environment. This solution does a decent job of basic email security and centrally managed controls. Hardware upgrade options seem limited though if adding a lot more email boxes. Retention options are limited compared to other products.
  • Blocks a majority of spam and malicious emails
  • Sandboxing options limited
  • Not the best solution out there that we have seen
Barracuda owns this space as far as I am concerned. SonicWall has very robust firewalls, but their other offerings are a little behind times compared to Barracuda. SonicWall also seems to be a lot more expensive than other alternatives. Barracuda offers a 4-year hardware refresh cycle whereas SonicWall does not.
